The Recycled Materials Association (ReMA), Washington, has named lifestyle audio brand Skullcandy the recipient of its first-ever Corporate Leadership & Innovation Award in recognition of its commitment to companywide sustainable practices and recycling.
Skullcandy’s new EcoBuds collection exemplifies this commitment, according to ReMA. Skullcandy says its EcoBuds were designed to reduce impact at every stage of the manufacturing process without compromising the product’s sound, look or fun.
Skullcandy’s EcoBuds feature a battery-free charging case and recycled plastic construction. The company also provides a wholesale refurbishment program for returned or damaged products.
“For the development of the Skullcandy EcoBuds headphones, we took a look at how people use their earbuds and rethought the design to develop a product that has a 50 percent reduction in carbon footprint compared to similar audio products on the market," Skullcandy CEO Brian Garofalow says.
Through its Music With a Mission initiative, Skullcandy donates a portion of its proceeds to nonprofit partners such as To Write Love On Her Arms and Protect Our Winters that provide help in developing climate advocates, as well as other charities.
Skullcandy will be presented with the Corporate Leadership & Innovation Award on May 14 as part of the ReMA2025 convention in San Diego.
“Skullcandy exemplifies what happens when a company aligns its product design and corporate practices with its beliefs,” ReMA President Robin Wiener says. “By incorporating recycled materials into their products, Skullcandy is a leader in creating an everyday consumer product that also benefits the environment by protecting natural finite resources. We are proud to name Skullcandy the recipient of ReMA’s inaugural Corporate Leadership & Innovation Award."
